The Burns Brothers facilitated the transfer of coal from the barges on the canal to smaller vehicles such as wagons and automobiles for delivery. The concrete silos were supported by concrete legs making the structures 40 to 50 feet tall. By 1970 the Burns Brothers business had folded and the silos remain as industrial relics of one of Gowanus's major freight industries.
