In 2006, over fifty thousand people in the Phulbari SubDistrict of Bangladesh mobilized against an openpit coal miningproject that posed serious environmental and social risks. The state authorities negotiated with the protesters intensively over four days to reach an agreement. However, the state failed to fulfill the agreement, and the protest movement continued.
The Phulbari Solidarity Group is a transnational activist group which exists to support and represent the communities loe d within the Phulbari region of Bangladesh in opposing the plans for a largescale opencast mine in the region. If the mine is built, it would lead to forceddisplacement of up to 230, 000 people over the course (30 years) of the project.
